
The gluten free diet is getting popular nowadays as more people are getting more conscious about their health. However, there is a recent study conducted in which the results of the said study was published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. According to the results of this study, 30 percent of patients with celiac disease who are following this type of diet failed to show the effectiveness of the said diet to their health condition. Apparently, people with celiac disease are advised to follow a gluten free diet because it promises the recovery of intestinal damage after 5 years of continuous adherence to the said diet.
According to the authors of this study, a substantial portion of the patients with celiac disease did not show any improvement at all after five years of following the said diet. This is not really the first time that a certain study illustrates these figures. Previously, there is also another study that was published last year and based on this study, more than 80% of patients that are on this type of diet failed to show any healing in their intestinal wall. These results then lead to the question as to whether the gluten free diet is effective or not.
The industry dealing with the sale of gluten free foods have made more than 2 billion dollars in 2010 thus, making it the fastest growing sector in the food industry. This is a great indicator how popular this diet has become. Most of the chronically sick people especially those who were diagnosed to be sensitive to gluten are advised to turn to a gluten free diet. Most of the time these people are advised to avoid those foods that are extremely unhealthy, highly processed, and not gluten free.
However, these results only show that there is a problem in this type of diet and there is a possibility that doctors and nutrition experts may be part of this problem. Apparently, instead of educating patients about the health detriments of these gluten free foods, they promote them. A lot of foods containing the said substance are all over the market and following this type of diet strictly seems to be a difficult task. In addition to this, it was also found out that a lot of these gluten free foods are not really gluten free at all. This may be one of the reasons why it is not effective for some, don’t you think?
So if you are really serious in getting into a gluten free diet, then make sure that you are really adapting a true gluten free diet and not the so-called traditional gluten free diet that still have some health issues until now.
